KARACHI: Pakistani stocks ended nearly flat on Tuesday, as profit-taking in some shares wiped out gains in the energy and fertilizer sectors, analysts said.

The benchmark 100-share index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange closed up 0.03 percent, or 10.25 points, at 33,032.85.

The energy sector extended its winning streak, mainly due to a continuing rally in international oil prices, said Gohar Rasool, head of international sales at Inter Market Securities Pvt. Ltd.

Oil and Gas Development Co Ltd. closed up 0.52 percent, Pakistan Petroleum Ltd. up 0.92 percent and Pakistan Oilfields Ltd. rose 0.88 percent.

"Engro (Corp.) saw some profit-taking but the main excitement which changed the overall momentum of the market was seen in Engro Foods," said Rasool.

Engro Corp. Ltd. closed down 1.37 percent, but its subsidiary Engro Foods Ltd. jumped 5 percent. Last week, Royal FrieslandCampina NV, a dutch dairy company, agreed to buy a 51 percent stake in Engro Foods.

As of Tuesday's close, Engro Foods's shares has gained about 22 percent since the announcement.

The rupee ended almost steady at 104.70/104.75 against the dollar, compared with Monday’s close of 104.67/104.74. Overnight rates in the money market fell to 4.50 percent from Monday’s close of 5.25 percent.
