KARACHI: Pakistani stocks ended higher on Monday, powered by a rally in energy shares as oil prices extended gains and on foreign-led buying in cement stocks, analysts said.
The benchmark 100-share index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange closed up 1.79 percent, or 580.86 points, at 33,022.60.
Front-month Brent crude futures were trading up 63 cents at $39.35 a barrel at 1215 GMT, as tightening supply and an improving global outlook strengthened the sentiment for a market recovery.
Oil and Gas Development Co. Ltd. closed up 3.34 percent, Pakistan Oilfields Ltd. rose 3.04 percent and Pakistan Petroleum Ltd. ended up 3.79 percent.
Cement stocks also gained on the day, after strong foreign buying in the sector, said Hammad Aman, an equity manager at Topline Securities Pvt Ltd.
Maple Leaf Cement Factory Ltd. closed up 3.53 percent, while D G Khan Cement Co. Ltd. and Fauji Cement Co. Ltd. rose 1.67 percent each.
As bulls took hold of the market, gains were seen in almost all sectors, said Gohar Rasool, head of international sales at Inter Market Securities Pvt Ltd.
