RIYADH: Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, chairman of Alwaleed Philanthropies, was awarded the “Distinction of University Benefactor” by the University of Edinburgh, for his contributions of over £8 million to the University’s Prince Alwaleed Center for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World.
Prof. Sir Timothy O’Shea, principal and vice chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, presented the award in recognition of Prince Alwaleed’s significant and long-term contributions to the university.
Prince Alwaleed has also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh in 2010.
The honorary doctorate was given to Prince Alwaleed by the Chancellor Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Princess Lamia bint Majed Al-Saud, secretary general of Alwaleed Philanthropies along with Hassna Alturki, executive manager for international relations to the chairman, Fahad bin Nafil, senior executive assistant to the chairman, and Hani Agha, head of travel and external affairs department, attended the meeting at the Savoy Hotel in London.
The Prince Alwaleed Center for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World is part of a global network of six centers funded by Alwaleed Philanthropies.
They are located in prestigious seats of learning across the world– the University of Cambridge, Georgetown University, Harvard University, the American University of Beirut, the American University in Cairo and the University of Edinburgh.
“The University of Edinburgh is a historic institution, and to be honored with the Distinction of University Benefactor is a true privilege,” said Prince Alwaleed upon receiving the award.
“Our partnership is the result of a shared common passion — to create a more tolerant and accepting world.”
He added: “We will continue to work together over the coming years to achieve this goal. I am confident that we will succeed, thanks to the groundbreaking research and innovative outreach of the Alwaleed centers in Edinburgh and across the world.”
For over 35 years, Alwaleed Philanthropies has supported and initiated projects in over 120 countries regardless of gender, race, or religion.
Alwaleed Philanthropies collaborates with a range of philanthropic, governmental and educational organizations to combat poverty, empower women and youth, develop communities, provide disaster relief and create cultural understanding through education.
