BELEK, Turkey: US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew told senior Chinese officials he would support adding the yuan currency to the basket on which the International Monetary Fund’s SDR unit is based, if it meets the IMF’s criteria, Lew’s spokesperson said.
Lew met with China’s vice premier and finance minister on the sidelines of the G-20 leaders meeting in Turkey, the spokesperson said.
The IMF is expected to this month approve the inclusion of the yuan, also known as the renminbi, into its $280 billion basket of currency reserves, known officially as Special Drawing Rights, or SDR.
Its inclusion in the basket would mark a major diplomatic victory for Beijing’s campaign to internationalize the currency.
It moved closer to inclusion on Friday, after IMF staff and IMF chief Christine Lagarde gave the move the thumbs up.
The IMF’s executive board, which represents its 188 members, is unlikely to go against the staff recommendation, said Meg Lundsager, a fellow at the Wilson Center and until last year the US representative on the IMF board.
“I would not be surprised if it was pretty close to unanimous,” she said, adding that any opposition to the inclusion would have been voiced before now.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said that Beijing is ready to boost economic and trade cooperation with Indonesia by enhancing cooperation in major fields such as infrastructure and expanding the scale of currency swap between the two countries.
Meeting with his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo on the sidelines of the G-20 summit, Xi said China is satisfied with bilateral cooperation this year as the two sides have achieved new positive results in docking their respective development strategies and deepening practical cooperation.
The Chinese side will also provide support for Manila to carry out reconstruction after forest fire and other relevant projects involving people’s livelihood, Xi added.
For his part, Widodo said Indonesia attaches great importance to its ties with China and is willing to join hands with the Chinese side to promote reciprocal cooperation in such areas as railway and energy.
He also expressed his support for China to hold next year’s G-20 summit.
During the first day’s summit, Xi elaborated China’s views on the world economic situation, raised proposals to address global challenges and urged sides to explore new impetus for global economic growth.
After Antalya, Xi will fly to Manila to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders’ Meeting from Wednesday to Friday to promote global economic cooperation and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.
