Global Environmental Mana-gement Services (GEMS) has been selected by the Energy Globe international jury, as the 2013 national winner.
The Energy Globe Award was founded in 1999, and is one of today’s most prestigious environmental awards, in support of the UN Environment Program (UNEP).
The award honors projects that have presented effective and sustainable solutions to major environmental challenges; which conserve and protect resources, or employ renewable energy.
The Energy Globe Certificate is an internationally recognized hallmark for sustainability.
This year, a total of 1051 projects were submitted for consideration, from more than 100 countries; and a single winner has been selected from each country.
The winning projects will be broadcast on the UN World Environment Day.
This year’s award to GEMS will be the third national Energy Globe award ever to be won in the Kingdom.
The GEMS Dammam Integrated Waste Management Center (IWMC) is an exemplary sustainability project, with an ethos of maximum safety, resource recovery, and minimum waste disposal to the environment.
The project, led by GEMS CEO Amyn S. Dahya, offers holistic waste management services to most major industries in the Kingdom, including industrial cleaning, waste collection, safe handling, transportation, treatment, recycle and disposal.
The IWMC is comprised the Best Available Technologies (BAT) from global sources, which are integrated by Spanish Technology Partner UtilEco, using advanced engineering to provide facilities that can safely handle and recycle a broad range of wastes, with minimum disposable outputs to the environment.
The key products from the IWMC include renewable fuels, recovered reagents, and recycle grade water – a precious resource in the Kingdom and the GCC.
