Although acne can be a chronic condition, even if it occurs only during adolescence, it can leave lifelong scars. Its treatment is usually long-term and costly. It is therefore important that acne is meticulously addressed when it appears for the first time.

Types of scars

Cytoplasmic scars: Red or cytoplasmic spots indicate inflammation that has occurred as a result of pimples, which disappear with time.

Hypertrophic scars: These are red and prominent. They can be —

• Simple: They are of the size of a blister they replace. Fade within 12-18 months.

• Smallpox: They are often larger than the original blister, and usually appear on the upper chest, neck and cheeks.

Atrophic scars: These are hollow and can be one of the following —

• Appear like ‘snow perforation’ or can be V-shaped, very thin, vertical and deep.

• Shaped like ‘U’, hollow and its edges look like a web.

• Scars with rounded edges or M-shaped, hollow and slanted.

• Inflamed follicles, small white spots appearing on the breast and upper chest.

Treatments:

1. Supplements by injection

What do they do?

Raise the slanted scars.

How does it work?

This method is based on the injection of an absorbable complementary product under scars, such as hyaluronic acid (Stylage or Restylane), or multi-lactic acid (Sculptra), or calcium hydroxyapatite (Radiesse).

Positives

There are no side effects in the days following the injection, and the procedure does not require preparing the skin.

Negatives

Since the products that are injected are absorbable, the treatment should be renewed.

2. Facelifting acne scars surgery

What does it do?

It is often the first step to deal with acute acne scars. It is a rare technology that allows to “facelift” deep scars.

How does it work?

With the help of a circular scalpel, the doctor surrounds the hollow scars and lifts them to the surface. He then makes a vertical tear/rip in the scars using a needle, in order to cut the fibrous tissue that keeps them at the bottom. The scars become less deep and somewhat circular or in the shape of a small line, and thus, softening by laser becomes easier.

Positives

Does not require initializing/preparing the skin.

Negatives

The used ring scalpel leaves circular and clear scars that last three weeks.

The scars that have been lifted may result in some leftovers that can be removed. Skin can be softened by other techniques, such as crystal peeling.
