It is everyone’s dream to have long, shiny and healthy hair. It is not impossible to achieve a beautiful mane, you just need to pay close attention to it.

Founder of Spa to Go Dania Khafaji recommends a visit to the dermatologist to find out what type of hair you have so as to choose the right shampoo and treatments. “Your hair is like your skin, it needs all the attention your skin needs every day and it also needs a break from all the chemicals it is exposed to,” she said.

Change the way you wash your hair and pay close attention to the temperature of the water you wash with. “Water temperature is very important because washing your hair with hot water will cause it to dry out and become brittle, it will break and not become long and thick,” said Khafaji. “Don’t wash your hair everyday, this will make you benefit less from the hair’s natural oils. It’s okay if your hair is oily, spray a little dry shampoo if you’re too embarrassed to go out in public. Other than that, wash your hair a maximum of three times a week,” she added.

After shower, dry your hair gently and don’t be rough with it. “Many women dry it with their towel, them comb it and try to blow it dry. This will break your hair and deprive it of growth and health,” said Khafaji. “Pat your hair with a towel and let it air dry. Don’t blow dry your hair often, and do it only on special occasions because wet hair cannot handle super hot temperatures, which will cause it to break, frizz and eventually split the ends because of which you will be required to cut it,” she added.

Harsh chemicals on the hair will contribute to poor hair growth. “Most shampoos you use contain sulfates that extract from the hair its natural oils and leave it unprotected and exposed to damage. Conditioners contain silicones that coat your hair with chemicals and you will need to wash them out with a stronger shampoo,” said Khafaji. “Try to use an all natural product and give your hair a break every once in a while from conditioners. Once a week, polish your hair with apple cider vinegar for oily hair and coconut oil for dry hair to let it benefit from natural products instead of commercial conditioners,” she added.

Other chemicals such as hairsprays, hair dye and hair masks can all be replaced by natural ones. “Nourish your hair and feed it at least twice a month by using hair masks and oil treatments. Make your own hair mask using different products from your kitchen,” said Khafaji. “When dying your hair with a different color, try using henna for it will do both the needed jobs, coloring hair as well as feeding them,” she added.

Protect your hair from external damage. “If you spend long hours under the sun, try to cover your hair with a hat or a head scarf. Also make sure to wear a swimming cap when diving into the pool to protect it from chlorine,” added Khafaji.

Brush your hair the right way to avoid shedding and damaging the ends. “Always use a brush with natural bristles and a wooden handle. Always brush your hair when it’s dry, this means you need to brush your hair before going to the shower to have smoother hair with less damage,” said Khafaji. “If you really need to wash your wet hair, use a comb with big teeth and follow it with your fingers to make sure you don’t tear the tangled hair,” she added.

“When brushing dry hair, always start from the bottom up so you would loosen the tangles at the end and you reach the top easier without damaging the hair,” Khafaji added.

Drink water and eat a healthy diet. “You need to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to keep your hair hydrated and nourished. Eat more protein because it will feed your hair to grow. Take supplements of Omega-3 fatty acids, the fat will provide the shine you need,” said Khafaji. “Ask your doctor for a hair growth supplement, they are said to help promote hair growth and lead to longer hair over time,” she added.
