Last week, I had to interrupt this sequence of articles in order to respond to a reader who is an activist for a group called Skeptics for the Protection Cancer Patients. I thank him for showing us the other side of the coin and his interest for cancer patients. You readers deserve to be informed. Decisions should not be taken without sufficient information.

I still have a couple of high profile stories that show the resistance practiced by the health establishment and mainstream medicine against alternative cures in general.

In 1947, pioneer brothers, Drs Wifred and Evan Shute of Ontario, Canada, were the first to discover the importance of high doses of vitamin E, 800 IU, to the human body, especially for circulatory and heart diseases as well as speed healing severe burns. Because the medical community was not interested in introducing vitamins and nutrients in the healing process, the findings about vitamin E were met with massive rejection from it and the health authorities, which continued to do so for 40 years, depriving heart patients from vitamin E benefits. Fortunately today, vitamin E is prescribed universally for heart disease, cardiovascular disorders, and for other health issues.

Every time scientists or doctors come with a novel concept, finding, research or treatment, especially natural, they are met with undue rejection and unreasonable resistance and are driven out of their careers.

Here is another story that keeps me wondering. Over 60 years ago, Dr. Fred Kummerow, a scientific researcher of lipids, cholesterol, heart disease, the basic chemistry of food, how the body works, and nutrition for nearly eight decades, became one of the first scientists to reveal that trans fats (heated vegetable oils and hydrogenated fats) are the culprits behind arterial plaque and blood clots as well as “imbalance of nutrients.” He was also one of the first scientists to associate trans fatty acids to cardiovascular disorders, heart disease, and blood clots. Since the introduction of hydrogenated oils and trans fats in the daily diet and in processed foods, death caused by such diseases has increased. The 100-year-old scientist went as far as exonerating eggs and organic saturated fats from cholesterol buildup.

For decades, Dr. Kummerow kept warning against such harmful fats, but his words fell on deaf ears. Then in 2009, he “filed a citizen petition with the [American Food and Drug Administration] FDA calling for a ban on synthetic trans fats,” which said: “Trans fat leads to the reduction of prostacyclin that is needed to prevent blood clots in the arteries. A blood clot in any of the coronary arteries can result in sudden death.” The FDA was expected to respond within 180 days, yet four years passed and no response came from the agency.

Two years ago, Dr. Kummerow “filed a lawsuit against the agency.” Guess what? Soon after that “the FDA announced it was considering removing partially hydrogenated oils…from the list of “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) ingredients. Moreover to give you an idea of the wide use of trans fats, the FDA declared there are “30,000 items in the American diet that contain trans fats.” Though supposedly removed, they are still included in a small percentage. Look how much profit the food and drug manufacturers make from people’s illnesses and death. We have to be cautious with what we put in our mouths. We should become smart consumers for our own good.

This is to show you the resistance practiced by the health establishment and mainstream medicine to outsider research that might disrupt their conventional methods of treatment or their cosy setup. They are not open to change or advancement outside their boundaries.

With this said, allow me now to continue with Suzanne Somers’s interview with the brave scientist Dr. Burzynski.

Stanislaw Burzynski finished his doctoral thesis on peptides in Poland. His interest became more focused on peptides, when he noticed that several peptides were found deficient in cancer patients’ blood and urine samples. He managed to isolate and name the peptides missing in cancer patients.

At that time, Poland became difficult to live in, especially if a person excels and thinks independently. His father was arrested for political reasons. Life became even more difficult and restrictive during the Iron Curtain rule with spies living among them. Personal freedoms, political involvements, and different ideologies were restricted, too. With very limited opportunities and restricted freedoms of thought, education, and action, he found himself faced with no other option than to leave his homeland and head to the United States. But, that was not easy either without the proper official documents. When he finally did get his passport, he was not allowed to take with him anything except fifteen dollars and “the chromatographic documentation of the thirty-nine peptides,” which he isolated earlier.

As a result of his departure, Burzynski was fired from his work as a researcher and no other medical school in Poland would hire him. He then realized that there was no way of going back. Because of his credentials, research, and scientific background, it was not a big issue for him to find work in America. He was offered a faculty position at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Luckily, he got to work in the lab of a scientist by the name of George Ungar, who was also working on peptides, but brain peptides.

During his research, Burzynski found that when he supplemented patients with the missing peptides, which he called antineoplastons (ANPS), their cancer would go into remission. The therapy was promising, but to abide with FDA demands, he had to use the ANPs along with a very “low-dose, weak chemotherapy to perform clinical trials.” Because of the peptide therapy, the patient would not feel the terrible chemo side effects of low energy, hair loss, and psychological or physical frailty, usually experienced with the high-doses of chemotherapy. After the treatment, they would feel healthy and energetic and live longer productive years.

Because of his persistent character, he managed to pursue his medicine and scientific work passionately and relentlessly, even though his kind of medicine did not earn him the big gains orthodox therapies bring to oncologists.

Burzynski explains to Somers, “That there is a system in peptides, which are deficient in cancer patients, which can inhibit the growth of cancer cells, and that replacing these peptides kills the cancer cells without killing normal cells.” Ideally, that is how cancer therapies should function and not destroy the immune system.

He explains, “A peptide is a molecule which is composed of two or more amino acids. If you combine two amino acids through a special chemical bond called a chemical bond, you have peptide. Protein is simply a large peptide.” When a molecule contains more than fifty amino acids, it becomes a protein according to scientists, whereas a molecule carrying fifty or less amino acids, it is called a peptide. So, peptides contain less amino acids than their counterparts, the proteins. Enzymes are made of amino acids, too. Insulin can also be considered a protein as it contains fifty different amino acids.

Burzynski continues saying that “we can’t live without amino acids.” Eight amino acids should be supplied through diet or supplements. They usually come from animal protein. They are called “essential,” because they happen to be the main building blocks of proteins as well as peptides and they have to be supplied through the diet, mainly through animal protein. If amino acids are the foundation of proteins, he says, “Proteins are the building blocks of life.” Life cannot exist without proteins, except for certain viruses, which are made of nucleic acids and peptides.

Next week, I shall continue with Burzynski’s explanation on peptides and their importance to human life and survival.
