Last week, I stopped at scientist Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski explaining how he discovered the missing peptides in cancer patients. He also described in detail the functions of amino acids, enzymes, peptides, and proteins and their importance to human existence. Because of the imposed restrictions in his homeland Poland, he had to leave to America. Here is the sequence of his story.

The young Burzynski came to the US with only $15 on him along with his research findings on peptides, fleeing the Iron Curtain imposed in Poland. He was hoping to do his research and scientific work freely in the land of the free, America. Little did he know that his research would be faced with an invisible “iron wall.” He was nearly put in jail for applying his peptide therapy on terminal cancer patients who had already gone through failed conventional protocols. What saved him from jail was the testimony of his grateful cured patients and their families who had tremendous respect for him and were thankful for his therapy. After he was cleared of the charges of the FDA, he had to restrict his research to clinical trials. He managed to patent some of the isolated peptides and named them antineoplastons (ANP).

Though he was licensed, the harassment did not stop. It was picked up by the Texas Medical Board, contesting his license. It was all about the peptide therapy, which treated many types of cancers resistant to pharmaceutical cancer drugs. Let us continue with the peptide story.

During his scientific research and experiments in Poland as a young medical student, Burzynski noticed that blood and urine samples of cancer patients showed an absence of certain peptides, whereas healthy people had intact peptides. His findings of the deficiency in peptides in cancer patients could be compared to low red blood cells in anemic patients, which gave him the idea of supplementing his patients with peptides. To his surprise, the peptide therapy worked.

Burzynski explains what peptides are and what they do in the body. He says peptides have very important actions to perform. One of their activities is transmitting information, which is necessary to have the body and systems operate optimally by communicating. When they are missing, disorders surface. He says, “Cancer is a disease of information processing. When the body has the necessary peptides, it can switch off cellular dysfunction and stop the illness.”

Peptides have yet another function; they work as “memory tags.” With peptide tags available, the brain can select these tags and use them to retrieve memory and information, which are processed by the brain like a computer does. Through information (data) processing, proteins and immune cells communicate, thus protecting against microorganisms and defective cells. By switching off misinformation, “the peptide system corrects the information inside the cancer cell” and switches on normal cell functioning, thereby repairing the faulty genetic information. This system works like a second immune system.

With an adequate peptide system, the body addresses and corrects the defective genes that trigger cancer, and it causes the destruction of cancer cells without harming healthy cells. Because ANPs are made of peptides, they target cancer cells and get them to destroy themselves without disturbing normal cells.

The thirty-nine antineoplastons, produced by Burzynski, work on one hundred different genes that control many types of cancers, thus helping many cancer patients. On the other hand, the twenty-four gene-targeted chemotherapy drugs approved by the FDA work only on one single gene. That is why they are not effective on most cancers, as cancer involves more than two thousand genes.

This makes conventional drugs much less effective on different cancers, thus ineffective in delivering the desired results. The tumors may shrink, but they come back shortly in an invasive manner. The cancer patients treated by Burzynski have a better surviving chance with antineoplastons, which address multiple genes and switch them on to destroy the cancer.

Based on genetic analysis, patients are selected for ANP therapy, rather than using one conventional protocol for all types, “a shot in the dark.” According to Dr. Burzynski, peptide therapy is “a personalized cancer treatment using combinations of gene-targeted medications.” He continues explaining that while orthodox medicine has not come up with a drug that targets the BRCA gene, a ravaging breast cancer gene that runs in families, especially in Ashkenazi Jews, ANPs produce more effective results on this particular gene.

After a long struggle with his research and health authorities, Burzynski hopes to get all of his ANPs approved in order to cover most types of cancer. He is also working on the role of peptides in the memory and how to make them slow down Alzheimer’s disease.

Burzynski explains to Somers how he selects the appropriate therapy for a cancer patient. Through blood tests, he tries “to determine the genetic signature of cancer in these patients.” Three days later, the results come and he is able to “identify the most important oncogenes involved in cancer for that individual.” After that he says, “We select a group of four to six medications from the twenty-four which are now approved by the FDA, and use them to the genes which are causing the cancer to progress.”

Because each patient has an individualized treatment plan prepared specifically for him or her, Burzynski calls it “boutique treatment.” When patients get the “proper gene signature,” they receive effective results and a better chance of survival with quality life. Unfortunately, 15 percent of cancer patients do not respond to the therapy. He says “the problem is finding the genetic signature because for many of these different genetic signatures, we don’t have the blood tests…yet.” He continues saying “We learn something new every day… At present we also use a broad spectrum approach, using medications which work on numerous genes and the patients may respond.” Some of the ANPs work on about one hundred genes.

The worst and most unresponsive types of cancers (brain, liver, pancreas, lung) are usually selected for treatment. These include brain tumors to be treated with antineoplastons. A gene-targeted therapy in combination with one kind of ANP to take orally is used for other patients. In some cases, he uses very low doses of chemotherapy to bring about better results, producing minimal side effects and costing less for the patient.

Many patients who go to Dr. Burzynski’s clinic have already exhausted most modern protocols (multiple chemo, radiation, surgery). In spite of their depleted bodies, some patients have success with ANPs. He explains that antineoplastons are different from chemotherapy or cancer drugs and work differently than chemicals. Because they are natural compounds, existing in our blood, they protect the body from cancer. They don’t poison our cells or leave harmful side effects like chemicals do. Peptides are necessary molecules, which are part of our structure.

The other advantage of peptides is that they are effective on many genes in our bodies, giving the patient a better chance of getting help. They are so mild that they can be used on children with the most common type of brain tumor, astrocytoma, having more than 90 percent success. The same treatment is effective on other malignancies. The therapy requires more research and work to be refined, but research funds are not available most of the time.

Next week, I shall talk about the instrument the scientist is trying to develop, which would give indications of switched on and switched off genes. I shall also discuss the supplements that he recommends to activate suppressed cancer protecting genes.
