In the last few articles, I have been writing about the possible natural cancer therapies with alternative methods alone or integrating conventional cancer protocols (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery) with natural treatments (individualized nutrition, supplements, detoxification, liver flushing, bioidentical hormones, coffee enemas, pancreatic enzymes). Natural therapies target and starve cancer cells to death and revive hampered immune systems, while conventional treatments destroy cancer cells along with healthy cells, natural killer cells, and immune systems.

All I am doing is introducing to you alternative therapies and the brave doctors, oncologists, and scientists who have conceived, designed, and applied them to cure cancer, give quality life to cancer patients, and extend their lifespan, according to Suzanne Somers book: Knockout. You have the right to know other options for treatments and regaining health.

Last week, I wrote about science writer Ralph Moss, PhD, who is also a tireless critic of conventional cancer therapies and the establishment and their alliance with the pharmaceutical industry. He has written several books on cancer.

Big Pharma and the people around them are the beneficiaries of costly mainstream cancer therapies, regardless of drug failure or low remissions rates. Should cancer be treated with over-the-counter cures, gigantic profits would plummet for Big Pharma, their lobbyists, and special interest groups, who push and promote toxic and low safety therapies to get approved by the FDA. Those who support the drug industry benefit from it. This is the reason for their hostility and fierce attempts to defeat the efforts of integrative doctors, their alternative methods, and natural therapies and to get them out of business. The FDA and the health establishment seem to be adamant to knock out novel ideas or cures for cancer not coming from the drug industry even if they are nontoxic and accuse the brave doctors of quackery and charlatanism in spite of their scientific and medical credentials and effective therapies.

What angers Dr. Moss is that mainstream oncologists and hospitals insist on administering such chemotherapy drugs as Adriamycin, even though it was found ineffective on 92 percent of women with breast cancer during a study done at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Moreover, it produces “very serious cardiac side effects” in patients. The drug was denounced by the “brave and brilliant scientist heading the Revlon Center at UCLA,” Dennis Slamon, M.D. in a speech addressing the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Not only did Slamon take the breast cancer oncology community by surprise, he also challenged the use of “Adriamycin for no good reasons.”

Unfortunately, oncologists still apply the drug without doing sensitivity tests that could spare cancer patients a lot of trouble and pain as well as their lives. Chemosensitivity tests, like antibiotic sensitivity testing, are done to see if that drug is effective in the destruction of the cancer cells in patients.

Dr. Larry Weisenthal involved in the sensitivity testing program at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) came up with a good method of testing, which is to find “signs of programmed cell death (apoptosis) in the cancer cells” by putting cancer cells in a dish with different cancer drugs or a combination of drugs and “measure the amount of apoptosis” and compare the results of drugs according to the destroyed cancer cells. Somehow, Weisenthal’s testing is not even given attention by oncologists, making the chemotherapy drug “one size fits all.”

Very few oncologists and scientists recognize the need for a cancer sensitivity testing; others ignore the method. Leaders in the cancer field, unfortunately, branded sensitivity tests as ineffective, at the same time relying on 20 years old obsolete techniques. Most oncologists forego the cancer sensitivity testing and individualized therapies for one-for-all treatments. When asked, some doctors would refuse certain cancer therapies (radiation for brain cancer, platinum-containing chemotherapy for lung cancer) for themselves, yet they prescribe them to their patients without a blink.

This attitude angers conscientious doctors, oncologists, and scientists who believe that each patient’s system responds differently to different drugs. We are all familiar with the saying, “One man’s meat is another man’s poison.” With individualized treatments, patients would have better chances of success and fewer side effects.

Dr. Moss’s anger is directed toward the advisory council of the FDA for approving a brain cancer therapy that shows “no evidence of increased survival” rate. This particular therapy generates $200 million a year in sales for the manufacturing company (this is just to give you an idea). The amount of $250,000 is required for a patient to treat colon cancer in Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Who makes such huge profits? The pharmaceutical companies, doctors, hospitals, lobbyists, and special interest groups do. What chances have inexpensive, natural, nutritional, and alternative treatments, which cannot even attract enough funding for research, against the power of Big Pharma?

Dr. Moss commends the innovative doctors like Gonzalez, Burzynski, and others who are dedicated to treat cancer patients with non-orthodox cancer therapies or integrating both protocols to minimize pain, suffering, and side effects and maximize remission chances and survival rates in cancer patients.

Today and in the following articles, I am going to introduce to you the brave doctors, oncologists, and scientists, who have changed the face of modern cancer treatments (chemotherapy….) not only by using nontoxic cures, but also for the cures that build the immune defenses; strengthen the body; activate dormant genes; give quality life; and lengthen life span. Ms. Somers has interviewed each one of them and probed into their natural healing techniques in order to have the public know that there exist other than conventional therapies of drugs, chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, which treat patients by destroying immune systems.

Today, I shall start with Somer’s interview with physician and scientist Stanislaw Burzynski, M.D. Burzynski was born in Lublin, Poland, in 1943. He is a pioneer in developing and applying “biologically active peptides called antineoplastons” to diagnose, prevent, and treat cancer and other disorders. He began in 1967 to use his technique on cancer patients with fifty different kinds of cancers. However, his biggest successes were mostly shown on cancers of the brain, breast, head, neck, prostate, colon, lungs, ovaries, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. With patients with advanced or aggressive brain tumors, therapies with antineoplastons can be effective.

For other types, he uses “personalized combinations of gene-targeted medications,” from the antineoplaston family, giving good results. His successes and accomplishments in this field made him known in the medical and scientific fields. His unorthodox approach to cancer treatment cost him persecution by the law and the health establishment. But, his successes in treating many desperate and terminally-ill cancer patients and their testimonials vindicated him, despite the accusations of government agencies.

The biggest threat to conventional cancer drugs is the successes of such approaches as Burzynski’s using personalized “targeted gene therapy and antineoplastons for so many kinds of cancer,” which showed positive results in cancer patients. However, his effective yet harmless therapy is still met with “violent opposition” by the medical establishment and Big Pharma, which, you can say, is justified, as the chemo business amounts to $200 billion a year.

According Dr. Julian Whitaker, a proponent of alternative treatments, “Acceptance of Burzynski’s discovery would nullify those efforts [of oncologists and their pharmaceutical drugs].” Such natural and nontoxic cancer cures would make conventional protocols obsolete and make big profits evaporate, as there isn’t “big” money in natural cures and no patents to hike costs of drugs.

Next week, I shall continue with Dr. Burzynski’s struggle with the FDA and law.
