AMMAN: Gunmen on Tuesday killed four Jordanian policeman in a shootout in Karak where a weekend attack claimed by the Daesh group killed 10 people, a security source said.
A second policeman was wounded after security forces launched a raid in search of suspects linked to Sunday’s attack, according to the source who declined to be identified, adding that the operation was ongoing.
The general security department, in a statement carried by the official Petra news agency, said the operation was launched to track down a number of wanted suspects who were holed up in a house in Karak.
The police surrounded the house and the suspects opened fire on them, the statement said.
A Jordanian member of parliament from Karak, Haitham Ziadeen, confirmed that an operation was under way in the city to arrest gunmen wanted by the authorities.
“A shootout erupted after security forces arrived to raid a house in the Qarifla region of Karak province, where the gunmen have sought shelter,” he said.
On Sunday gunmen killed 10 people, including policemen and a Canadian tourist, and wounded 34 other people, in a shooting spree in Karak, home to one of the region’s biggest Crusader-castle.
Four assailants were killed by the Jordanian security forces.
The Daesh group on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was carried out by four “soldiers of the caliphate,” in revenge for US-led coalition air strikes targeting jihadists in Syria and Iraq.
