JEDDAH: Foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) issued a final communiqué condemning the Syrian regime and its allies for their continued criminal military operations and air attacks with barrel bombs and internationally banned weapons on residential areas in Syria.
The ministers expressed belief in the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria and concern over the developments witnessed by Aleppo where brutal aggression is waged by the Syrian regime and its allies against unarmed civilians and the city's cultural heritage is being destroyed.
The ministers categorically condemned coercive policies adopted by the Syrian regime to subjugate the people, like siege, starvation and intimidation, in Aleppo and other besieged areas, acts that are considered war crimes, crimes against humanity and serious violations of international conventions and charters that stress the need to protect civilians in times of war.
They also asked that perpetrators be brought to justice.
They said that the only solution for the Syrian crisis lies in the resumption of the UN-sponsored negotiations, in accordance with Geneva 1 Declaration, of 2012, and UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which brings together representatives of the Syrian opposition and the Syrian regime.
The OIC ministers welcomed the UN Security Council Resolution 2328 (2016), which calls for UN observers to Aleppo and that evacuation of civilians from the city to the destination of their choice and stressed that refugees and displaced Syrians must be allowed to return to their homes as soon as the crisis is over, rejecting any measure the Syrian regime and its allies may consider to change the demographics in the country.
The ministers called on the UN Security Council and General Assembly to carry out their mandate, as stipulated in the UN Charter, and work to ensure the security and protection of civilians, lift sieges on populated areas, allow safe passage or evacuation of civilians to safe areas.
They welcomed UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura’s plan to resume direct talks between the Syrian regime and opposition on Feb. 7.
The conferees were briefed on the joint statement issued by the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey on Tuesday in Moscow, on steps to revive the peace process in Syria.
The OIC ministers renewed their condemnation of all forms of terrorism and affirmed their determination to uproot it, stressing the importance of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and extremism.
They condemned the systematic violations of human rights and heinous crimes committed by terrorist groups like Daesh and Al-Nusrah Front in Syria.
The ministers urged OIC member states and civil community organizations to provide humanitarian aid to the displaced Syrians and to the refugees and the countries hosting them.
They also called on the Security Council and other groups to enforce a cease-fire in Aleppo and other besieged areas that will allow workers to provide humanitarian relief to the population.
