The terrorizing Daesh is in trouble. Multiple ground assaults and a deluge of airstrikes have dented its base in Iraq, Syria and Libya — Fallujah, Dabiq and Sirte, respectively.
Pentagon says no less than 50,000 Daesh terrorists have been killed since 2014.
The collapse of these symbolic seats of its power gives some space for relief. They may be down, but they are certainly not out. They are still battling the government forces in Iraq, although Daesh is a weakened force now.
Does this signal the end of such radical ideologies? Even if savage groups such as Daesh are exterminated, there is a greater concern that is more menacing than Daesh: The rising number of radical elements and groups that are mushrooming in the midst of the so-called civilized world, mostly in Western society.
They are using democracy to grab power; that will be welcomed by the UN as representatives of their respective countries, unlike Daesh or Boko Haram. Is there a mechanism to check their growth?
