ISLAMABAD: There is no deal underway to hand over Dr. Shakil Afridi to the US, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Dr. Muhammad Faisal told Arab News on Thursday.
Afridi was arrested in May 2011 after US special forces raided Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad and killed the Al-Qaeda chief.
The doctor is alleged to have run a fake polio vaccine campaign to track down and confirm bin Laden’s presence in the city.
Citing “security concerns,” authorities transferred Afridi from Peshawar Central Jail to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on April 27.
Faisal denied a report by Russian news agency Sputnik that the CIA planned to organize a jailbreak to free Afridi from the Peshawar jail, and that the plan was thwarted by Islamabad.
