ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has received 21,482 nomination papers in total filed by potential candidates from across the country for July 25 polls on national and provincial assembly seats, it confirmed in a statement.
Tuesday, June 19, is the last day for scrutiny of these nomination papers.
Leaders of major political parties including Imran Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf; Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party; Nawaz Sharif, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz; and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were all cleared to contest the election and their nomination papers were accepted.
However, former military ruler Gen. Pervez Musharraf, chairman of All Pakistan Muslim League, who failed to return to Pakistan despite orders from the top court, will not be able to contest the election as his nomination papers were rejected.
Musharraf had filed nomination papers from Chitral, a hilly district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which he considers his stronghold.
All those candidates whose nomination papers have been rejected can file an appeal by June 22 and the appellate tribunals would decide the appeals by June 27.
Pakistan is all poised for general elections on July 25 with a number of political heavyweights weighing in to compete against each other.
From the federal capital Islamabad, former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi also filed his nomination papers to face PTI chief Imran Khan.
However, on Tuesday, the returning officer in Islamabad rejected the nomination papers of Imran Khan and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on technical grounds. They are most likely to go into an appeal.
