RIYADH: Saudi athlete and entrepreneur Somaiah Al-Dabbagh — reportedly the first Saudi woman to have competed in the World Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation) — is well-placed to understand the unique fitness needs of women. And a few years ago she felt that those needs were not being met by the activewear market.
“Most of what I saw was either too sporty or too plain,” she tells Arab News. “There was nothing that captured the feminine, elegant style that Middle Eastern women prefer,” she tells Arab News, adding that she was unable to find sports outfits that allowed for optimum performance but still looked stylish.

“Middle Eastern women want outfits that make a statement without being overwhelming,” she says. “We appreciate beautiful cuts and flattering silhouettes—designs that feel intentional.”
This observation led to the birth of Maeya, her luxury activewear brand, which has rapidly gained traction across the region since its launch in 2020.
Starting her business during the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges. Without investors or external support, Al-Dabbagh built Maeya from the ground up.
“I had no PR team or marketing agency — just determination and a clear vision,” she says. “Being self-funded taught me resilience and built the authenticity that defines the brand today.”
At the core of Maeya’s design philosophy is the belief that confidence “begins with how a piece feels,” Al-Dabbagh says. “The second-skin softness, sculpting fit — how the fabric supports you without restricting movement.”
Another central focus is inclusivity. “Every detail, from tapered waistbands to supportive bras, is crafted to flatter different body types,” she explains. And when it comes to colors, “We select palettes that complement a wide range of skin tones.” Maeya clothes will often come in soft shades with bold patterns adding flair.
As Maeya approaches its sixth anniversary in January, Al-Dabbagh remains dedicated to her mission.
“Maeya is designed to make women feel their absolute best,” she says. “When women tell me they feel beautiful and confident in their Maeya sets, I know I’ve succeeded.”
