Justice Javed Iqbal’s father, Malik Abdulhameed, and his wife were found strangled at their home in the capital of Pakistan’s Punjab province, TV channels reported.
Police are suspecting robbery as the motive behind the murders.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the killings.
Gilani sought an interim report on the murder within two days, while Punjab’s Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif ordered the province’s inspector general of police to arrest suspects as soon as possible.
Prominent Pakistani human rights activist and lawyer Asma Jahangir announced a day of mourning at the apex court on Wednesday. Regular work will not be affected though, she said.
Attackers asphyxiated the elderly couple to death using pillows and police found signs of strong physical struggle by Abdulhameed in his bedroom.
“The judge whose parents have been murdered is hearing some sensitive cases, one of them being the case of missing persons. Keeping this in mind, we will closely watch the investigation,” said Jahangir.
According to media reports, forensic teams were collecting evidence at the crime scene early on Wednesday and the bodies were sent for post mortem.
Criticizing lax security, Justice Wajeehuddin, who is a colleague of Justice Iqbal, said it was a sad incident that highlighted the government’s failure to discharge its responsibilities effectively.
The Punjab Bar Council announced a day of strike in protest on Wednesday.
