36% of Riyadh Metro project completed

RIYADH: Riyadh Gov. Prince Faisal bin Bandar on Wednesday praised authorities for successfully completing various phases of the Riyadh Metro project on time.
“They have completed 36 percent of the project and it will be completed in a period of two years and a few months,” the governor said.
Prince Faisal, who is also the president of the High Authority for the Development of Riyadh City and chairman of the Higher Committee on the implementation of the King Abdulaziz Project for public transport in Riyadh-train and bus, was present Wednesday to witness the completion of the Green Line tunnel under King Abdulaziz Road. Minister of Transport Sulaiman Al-Hamdan was also present at the event.
In a statement to the media, the govenor said: “We have seen the success of the national action which is being carried out under the supervision of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman.”
The fifth line (green line), which runs along the axis of King Abdulaziz Road, with a total length of 12.9 km, was completed Wednesday running adjacent to the King Salman Air Force Base roundabout. It runs 25 meters below the surface.
He said that the new project will benefit both citizens and residents. The project, he said, is being handled by world-renowned specialists in the field of railways.
The prince, along with the transport minister, took a tour through the channel.
The public transport project in Riyadh, comprising a metro network and a parallel bus network, is being established according to the comprehensive plan for public transport developed by the High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh. The plan aims to provide all population groups with suitable public transport services, diversify transportation means in the city effectively and appropriately, in addition to keeping the use of private cars within limits.
The project will be of great benefit to Riyadh traffic, the economy, society and environment. Moreover, it will provide the city with a giant public transport system to meet its existing and future needs.
The metro network constitutes the backbone of the public transport system in Riyadh. With six lines at a total length of 176 km and 85 metro stations. The metro network will cover most of the densely populated areas, public facilities, and the educational, commercial and medical institutions.
The network will be connected to King Khalid International Airport and King Abdullah Financial District, main universities, downtown and the public transport center.
The six metro lines are the first line (Blue Line): axis of Al-Olaya-Al-Batha-Al-Hayer roads, with a total length of 38 km; the second line (Red Line): axis of King Abdullah Road, with a total length of 25.3 km; the third line (Orange Line): axis of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah Road-Prince Saad bin Abdurrahman Road, with a total length of 40.7km; the fourth line (Yellow Line): axis of King Khalid International Airport Road, with a total length of 29.6 km; the fifth line (Green Line): axis of King Abdulaziz Road, with a total length of 12.9 km; and the sixth line (Violet Line): axis of Abdurrahman Bin Awf Road-Sheikh Hassan bin Hussain bin Ali Road, with a total length of 30 km.
