RIYADH: The Ministry of Commerce and Investment (MCI) inspection teams seized more than 10,000 expired food and consumer products in the local markets in the city of Hail on Tuesday.
The expired food products included more than 8,000 bottles of drinking water, cans of fruit juice stored randomly under the direct sunlight, which violates storage conditions and more than 850 spoiled food products due to inadequate storage.
Also, the seized items included more than 900 consumer products such as cosmetics, electronic appliances and expired automobile tires that did not conform to Saudi standards and specifications.
The inspectors also confiscated over 500 items of counterfeit famous brand clothes.
According to an MCI official, the seized items and the concerned shop owners have been cited for violating the anti-fraud regulations of the ministry.
“MCI inspection campaigns are always active in all the Kingdom’s regions and have seized large quantities of spoiled food and consumer products that were stored and distributed in markets to fraud and deceive consumers,” he said.
The ministry is continuing their inspection campaigns on warehouses and establishments to make sure that all business is carried out according to the specifications without fraud and consumer exploitation by marketing damaged or counterfeit goods.
The MCI has called all consumers to cooperate by reporting their complaints or inquiries to the customer call center at the ministry using the toll free number 1900, or through the smartphone application “Commercial Report.”
