Today’s world seems to be turning more and more defeatist. Every time you talk about a plan or a project, you find people who try to show you its difficulties and negative features, who want to convince you that success is highly improbable. In a nutshell, they try to deter you so that you finally give up. The idea of failure is deeply rooted in many human beings. They can only see the tiny black spot on the big white sheet where they are going to write. Their attention is usually focused on the risks that any endeavor implies rather than feeling encouraged to discover the best way to reach their goal. Many dreams are shut and forgotten inside a metaphorical drawer because they have previously been labeled as “impossible”. But nothing is utterly impossible, if one really wants to achieve it. The key word here is “really” (= with sincerity and with all your might).

Do you have a dream hidden in the deep of your soul? If you do, take it out. Now, dust it carefully, polish it and display it outside in the light of your new awareness. Any wish can be carried out if it fills your spirit, if it inspires you, if it creates passion, if it makes you feel happy by simply thinking about it. You only need to convince yourself that you can do it and then start elaborating a suitable plan based on reliable data, able to provide a platform for your steps toward the target. No runner ever won a race by thinking that the route was too difficult or that the other athletes were faster than he.

On the other hand, some individuals — instead of believing in themselves and mainly counting on their own capabilities — prefer to give up responsibilities and rely on others. The attitude of forfeiting part of one’s duties can certainly make things easier but… does it make anybody feel proud of themselves? Every now and then it is OK to ask for help or advice, as no one knows it all. Not even “you”. But the actual work can only by carried out by you. If you make a mistake, do not blame it on those who advised you. In fact, they based their advice upon their own experience, knowledge and convictions. They therefore believe that their words reflect what they are certain to be the truth. That is why the outcome, while it could have been positive for them, may end up being negative for you. Why? Because you are not “them”. Does it sound complicated? Absolutely not. If you try to give it a thought, you will realize how simple and how true it is.

Another scenario. In case someone refuses to help you either with advice or with something more material, don’t feel offended. You cannot judge the actions of another without knowing their motivations. Maybe you, too, in their situation, would have had the same reaction, done the same thing. Make up your mind and start counting on your own strength only. Roll up your sleeves and get to work. If, during your trek, you find yourself in need of a “walking stick” to support you for a while, be sure that you will find it. What you need at the beginning of your journey is just trust in reaching the arrival line in due time. You will certainly meet obstacles on your path, but this is only natural. Even on the straightest and best kept road, every now and then you will see stuff carried by the wind, or discarded by careless drivers. Even on the smoothest surface some rough spots can be detected. But they should not be enough to deter you, to make you desist. On the contrary. Facing and overcoming difficulties make you stronger, give you the awareness of what you are actually capable of doing. Therefore… stand tall, chin up and ... off you go!
