RIYADH: The state-run technical training center disclosed on Sunday that a total of 11,376 prisoners underwent practical and professional skills training under the organization’s scheme since 2004.

It is part of the organization’s responsibility to reintegrate citizens behind bars into an active and productive society when they return to their community.

According to the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC), the number of enrolled prisoners in the current training year has reached 2,740 in 36 training modules within the jails scattered in various regions of the Kingdom.

“This is in light of TVTC’s efforts to accommodate the largest possible number of interested detainees in order to qualify them and provide them with the necessary skills,” said the TVTC official.

TVTC will also seek to make those citizens ready for work when they return to the community after the end of their sentences and be active and productive members of the society. This would facilitate their access to suitable job opportunities, he said.

The foundation pointed out that 1,599 have already completed courses last year while the number of graduates since the program kicked off in 2004 stood at 11,376 graduates.

Speaking on the occasion, TVTC Deputy Gov. Dr. Rashid bin Mohammed Al-Zahrani said that TVTC programs has improved prisoners skills, and provided them professional qualification to enter the labor market after the end of their sentences.

He said TVTC is coordinating with various jail managements in various regions and governorates to facilitate the programs and identify their needs for equipments and environment. He said that TVTC makes sure that they acquire quality and proficient skills under the trained specialists’ supervision in addition to the diversity of disciplines being offered to them.

He said they are trained in electronics, sanitary fittings, computers, tailoring, hairdressing, carpentry, plumbing, painting, auto mechanics, refrigeration and air conditioning and welding.

“TVTC seeks to provide training for all segments of society and categories, and take the lead in the adoption of development projects which reinforces its importance within the community,” the official said.
