RIYADH: A total of 1,171 illegal workers were arrested in Madinah region last week, bringing the total number of such arrests to 99,775 since the launch of a campaign.

Maj. Gen. Abdul Hadi Al-Shahrani, Madinah district police chief, said 5,684 expatriates of different nationalities were arrested during Muharram for violating the labor and immigration regulations.

He said raids against violators were carried out with the cooperation of all the other relevant government agencies.

The police chief said those arrested have been kept in government custody in prisons and that action like deportation will be taken following a formal inquiry to ascertain the degree of their offenses.

He also asserted that the campaign against illegals will continue.
