DAMMAM: A concerted effort should be made by governments, civil society institutions and individuals to counter environmental damage being caused by certain people and companies, say activists.

Saleh bin Ali said that the irresponsible actions of some people have caused serious harm to the environment.

Delegates at every international environmental conference have urged unified action to ensure a harmonious relationship between humans and nature, he said recently.

Faleh Al-Dakhanan, a volunteer environmental activist, said that the lack of awareness has contributed to the destruction of vegetation and several animal species becoming extinct.

He said that while the Saudi Wildlife Authority has raised awareness of issues over the past several years, there was still a great deal of work to be done to educate the public on the importance of the environment.

He said government and private sector agencies must work together to develop a comprehensive strategy to deal with the challenges facing the planet, and ensure environmental issues become mainstream.

Another environmental volunteer, Faleh bin Nasser, said: “Environmental awareness means human beings recognizing the importance of all parts of the world around them. Creating a healthy and clean environment needs to start at home.”

Metrek Al-Wadie said that the media can play an important role in raising awareness, including setting up seminars and holding competitions on various aspects of the environment.

Mohammed Al-Sofiani, director of a university, said parents must do more to educate their children about protecting plant and animal life, which would ensure the planet is protected for future generations.
