JEDDAH: Since the start of the current mid-semester holiday, 105 car accidents have taken place in Asir, resulting in 12 deaths and 139 injuries.

The most recent accident involved a collision between three vehicles on the Abha-Al-Darb road, near the second tunnel in Oqb Al-Dilea, on Sunday.

Saudi Red Crescent spokesman Ahmed Ibrahim said in a press statement that the operations room received a report about the collision and that two ambulatory teams and a rapid response team were immediately dispatched to the site.

Among the three cars involved in the crash, a man and his wife were in the first car while in the second, there was only the driver. The individuals were extracted from the vehicles by rescue teams and examined, and all were announced dead at the scene due to serious injuries.

The driver of the third vehicle, however, suffered serious injuries and was transferred to Asir Central Hospital for treatment.

The spokesman said that rescue teams have responded to a number of accidents since the start of the holiday season. Last Thursday, 46 accidents took place, resulting in 64 injuries and six deaths. On Friday, the number of accidents was 30, resulting in 33 injuries and one death. On Saturday, two people died in 28 traffic accidents and 41 others were injured.

On Sunday, three other accidents took place resulting in the death of seven people and the injury of 10 others.

Shadi Al-Thubaiti, also of the Red Crescent in Al-Laith, said six people, including a man, a woman, and four children, died, while two other children and an expat were injured in a collision between two cars in northern Al-Laith.

Another crash took place along Al-Shifa Road in Taif, he said, resulting in six people being injured. Along Turbat Ranya road, one man died from being burned to death inside his vehicle after a head-on collision with another vehicle, while one person suffered numerous wounds.

Abdullah Al-Bugami, head of the Civil Defense team, said Civil Defense officials pulled the dead man from the vehicle and transported the injured person to hospital for treatment.
