RIYADH: Shoura Council will host a two-day meeting of the heads of legislative bodies from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in Riyadh beginning Wednesday, Nov. 25, to further bolster the mutual cooperation.

“The council has called a consultative meeting in this regard to prepare for the conference,” said Mohammed Alkhnessi, a Shoura Council member, here on Monday. He, however, refused to comment on the agenda of the meeting, saying that it was yet to be finalized.

According to sources close to the council, this is a coordination meeting of the chiefs of the legislative bodies aimed at coordinating the activities of legislative and consultative bodies in the region to boost the cooperation among the GCC countries and their citizens.

Members of the GCC legislative bodies will also join the parliamentary chiefs during the two-day meeting and a joint session will be held to further bolster legislative cooperation.

The chiefs or speakers of legislative bodies, accompanied by their parliamentary delegations, are expected to arrive here on Tuesday.

The GCC countries have made major advances over the decades in widening access to their people across the region and the joint efforts of the GCC leaders have strengthened unity, peace and security.

Notably, inspired from the European Union to cherish a common goal for an all-round development of the region, the GCC is working on a common currency like the euro, common police like Europol, a Schengen-style unified visa system and common tourism policy to usher in a new era of development in the region.
