Education method must change

• Some higher education institutions are still relying on academic methods dating back to the 17th century. It may not be easy to debate tradition, especially as they are global in nature most of the time, but despite this, the stability of academic rules cannot be viewed as synonymous with educational stability. The latter must be developed, with curriculum and content representing the needs and development of the time. Social life is developing locally and internationally, as are economic structures, the environment of the international system, and state relationships. Take for instance the digital revolution, which has had profound impact on all walks of life, including the sciences, and educational methods and approaches.

Fallout of domestic violence

• Domestic violence is that which occurs within the four walls of the home and among family members. The danger here is that this type of violence is not like other types of violence with direct effects, such as violence arising from conflict between the leadership of a state and extremist or political groups. This is because the effects of domestic violence are indirect and result from lopsided power equation within the family. Mostly, this type of violence leads to the birth of unstable personalities that are likely to move away from the values and rules of society. These people are also likely to commit dangerous acts, making them criminals.

• The annual rain and the promises

It appears that Jeddah as a city falls into a deep slumber until the rain comes along to wake it up painfully. It is this rain that points out the city’s areas of weakness. Rain on three different occasions in the recent past jolted this city’s inhabitants. The problem of poor rainwater drainage networks is evident, and some consider it the mother of all problems in this city called “The Bride of the Red Sea!” The genius who coined this epithet perhaps was confirming that Jeddah cannot in fact be separated from the water, be it the sea or rainwater! Now come the promises to deal with this problem and eliminate it at its roots.
