DAMMAM: Saudi Arabia has been ranked as the world’s 90th country and sixth among Arab countries in terms of the proportion of prisoners, at 161 jail inmates per 100,000 people.

The Kingdom occupies the 73rd place in the world in terms of the proportion of female prisoners, recording 5.7 percent, out of 215 countries surveyed by the British Institute of Criminal and Political Studies.

The study said that 47,000 prisoners are lodged in prisons across the Kingdom.

The Kingdom came in the seventh place among 183 countries in terms of the proportion of foreign prisoners, representing 72.2 percent.

Bahrain topped the list in the region in this regard and was ranked 31st place globally, followed by the UAE (57th globally), Morocco (61st spot worldwide). Tunisia was ranked fourth regionally and 64th globally while Algeria was ranked fifth among the Arab world and 88th worldwide.

The report dealt with conditions in prisons and the number of inmates in more than 220 countries during 2015, classified them into various categories, including the number of prisoners, their proportion per 100,000 people, the proportion of women prisoners and juveniles, under trial detainees, in addition to the number of prisons in each country and their occupancy level.
