A forensics health commission in Qassim has ordered a Syrian gynecologist to pay a woman SR150,000 for removing her ovaries without following proper medical procedures, according to a report in local media.

The gynecologist told the commission that the patient was admitted to Hail General Hospital with pain in her abdomen. Subsequent medical tests revealed tumors of about 9 cm in diameter in her ovaries.

He said that when he opened up the woman, he found festering liquid and tumors that he felt posed a threat to her life. He then called the woman's husband into the operating theater and gave him the diagnosis.

He also told the husband that he needed approval to remove the ovaries and that the patient would not be able to have children. The doctor said that he then removed the ovaries and cleaned the area.

The commission members said the doctor made a mistake by deciding to remove the ovaries, which should only have been done if a medical advisory committee had taken this decision.

The commission found that the left ovary was not completely diseased and could have been saved. In addition, the doctor failed to follow proper medical procedures by asking the husband to enter the operating theater.

The commission said the doctor should pay the victim SR75,000 for removing the ovary that could have been saved, and another SR75,000 for losing her ability to bear children.
