JEDDAH: The secretariat of Jeddah has allowed vendors or hawkers at 161 locations in Jeddah which comes under 12 municipal branches, according to an online newspaper.

Citing sources, the newspaper said that the South municipality area has got largest share of sites where hawkers are allowed. It got 34 locations where hawkers are permitted out of total 161 spread over various municipal areas of Jeddah.

With just four locations, the Umm Al-Silm municipal area has the least number of sites where hawkers are allowed.

In the Abhur and Thuwal municipal areas, hawkers have not been allowed.

There are 14 locations in the airport area, five in New Jeddah, 22 in Balad, six in Aziziayah, 10 In Sharqiyah, 16 in Buraiman, 12 in Historic Jeddah, six in Taibah, 11 in Zahban and 21 in Jamiah in the list where vendors are allowed to hawk their goods.

The decision to allow hawkers was taken after noting various aspects of administrative laws, and terms and conditions regarding such practices. These regulations would give Saudis an opportunity to sell legally by displaying their items in a suitable place so that they do not disfigure the face of the city.

The Jeddah Secretariat told all branches of the municipality to receive applications from Saudis who want licenses to work as hawkers.

The stalls of vendors or hawkers used for display and sale should not be longer than one-and-a-half meters and wider than half a meter. They should have a health certificate verifying that they do not have any infectious diseases, and they should not be younger than 15 years.
