JEDDAH: A resident has accused a private clinic at Abu Arish in Jazan province of wrongly conducting a hysterectomy (surgery to remove the uterus) on his 20-year-old wife, consequently denying her the ability to give birth to children for the rest of her life.

The man was quoted as saying by a local publication on Sunday that his wife suffered severe bleeding after giving birth to a child at the clinic. Subsequently, she was moved to the King Fahd Central Hospital, accompanied by a female doctor from the clinic, he said.

All attempts to stop the bleeding failed at King Fahd Hospital, so doctors decided to conduct a hysterectomy to save his wife’s life, the man said.

“According to the report of King Fahd Hospital, my wife suffered heavy bleeding. The report also said that the accompanying doctor mentioned the patient suffered from a ruptured cervix, but the hospital confirmed that the cervix was in fact not ruptured, so they removed her womb. This confirms that my wife was a victim of a grave medical error,” said the man.

The man said he filed a formal complaint with the Ministry of Health and the governorate, demanding an investigation into the matter and punishment to those responsible for the “medical error.”

“My wife is in a very bad psychological situation now. I intend to lodge a complaint with the Human Rights Commission as well,” he added.

Hussein Muashi, the official spokesman of the Jazan health department, was quoted as saying that the case has been referred to the violations committee of the Private Health Facilities Department for investigations.
