A Saudi citizen was beheaded Monday for drug trafficking. Saleh Al-Yami was convicted of smuggling hashish and banned narcotic pills and of injuring several policemen, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The beheading in the southern province of Najran raised to 57 the number of executions so far this year.

Drug trafficking, rape, murder, apostasy and armed robbery are all punishable by death under the Kingdom's laws.

In 2014, the Kingdom executed 87 people, according to an Agence France Presse tally.
