The special criminal court in Riyadh has sentenced nine Saudis to prison terms varying between one year and 10 years for their involvement in terrorist activities.

The sentences are to be followed with an equal travel ban, the court ruled.

The defendants were convicted of crimes such as sending financial aid worth up to SR110,000 to support fighters in Syria and Iraq and attempting to travel to conflict zones in these countries to take part in fighting.

The defendants were also held guilty of using and issuing fake passports, coordinating the travel of people to Iraq and Syria, owning illegal and unlicensed weapons and and deceiving the authorities.

All defendants have a maximum of 30 days to appeal the verdict, following which decisions will be sent to the Special Criminal Court of Appeals for auditing and verification.
