JEDDAH: The early warning screens of the General Presidency of Meteorology and Environment Protection showed up yellow color, indicating possible rain falls and unstable weather conditions in at least 11 regions.

Hussain Al-Qahtani, spokesperson of the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment, said rainy thunderstorms are also expected during the “Old Lady” days, accompanied by active surface winds with dust that will reduce horizontal visibility over the regions of Qasim, Hail, Northern Borders, Jouf, Madinah and the sourthern parts of the Eastern Province.

“Forecasters are predicting that the rainfall will extend to the highlands of Asir, Baha, Jazan, Makkah and the South-West coasts of Saudi Arabia,” added the spokesperson.

The days from Feb. 26 until March 4 are called as the “Old Lady” days, and are named Waber, Amer, Mo’tamar, Mualal and Matfi Aljamr due to their unique weather pattern.

Speaking to a local publication, Dr. Abdullah Al-Mesnad, a geography professor at Qassim University, said these days are named due to their characteristically short cold fronts, which will coincide with unstable weather conditions. Such conditions are expected to continue until next Sunday in the country.

“At the same time, rains are expected to fall on the Riyadh region and Hafr Al-Batin in the east, as well as in the regions to the north of the Kingdom, including the Northern Borders, Jouf and Hail in addition to Qasim,” said the geography professor.
