RIYADH: At least 30 Saudis attended a full day public speaking and persuasive communication training workshop at the British Council in the diplomatic quarter.
Those attending the workshop, organized by the BC with sponsorship from BAE Systems, were professionals who had studied in the UK including university professors, physicians, health care professionals, engineers, and senior officials including women from Riyadh and other Saudi cities.
Neil Marshal, a UK expert in public speaking and persuasive communication from Change School, a London-based leadership and executive education institute, conducted the workshop with active interaction from the participants.
“I was surprised at the level of involvement of these participants and the enthusiasm of Saudis in the workshop to master public speaking techniques. Public speaking is increasingly popular in our modern life for every one, especially for leaders, teachers, and researchers to be effective in their interaction with communities,” he told Arab News.
Mahmood Mosli, the Director of Programs and Projects at the BC, told Arab News that the workshop was organized to cater for the need training in public speaking expressed by many UK Alumni.
“We organized this workshop in collaboration with BAE Systems and Change School to bring the latest knowledge of techniques and skills to Saudi alumni who are mostly holding leadership positions in the Saudi public and private sectors. ” he said.
“Public speaking is becoming increasingly important in our daily life though many people say that public speaking is frightening. To eliminate this fear among Saudis, we brought this prominent expert to pass his expertise to the Saudis who are at present more active in participating as key speakers in public events like conferences, seminars and job meetings,” he added.
He said there had been a big demand for this free workshop and the BC had received more than 120 applications to participate in the workshop which was repeated in Jeddah Saturday 4 June. Only 30 were accepted in each session because of space constraints.
The workshop presented the concept of public speaking, tackled techniques of influence and trimming to create powerful persuasion methods, showed how to use language to move the audience, and presented physical aspects along with the body language of public speaking and other ways to benefit the speakers.
Rana Al-Rabiah said that public speaking was very useful for her as a medical researcher at King Faisal Specialist Hospital where she often needed to speak in meetings and seminars to the public.
Abdul-Ilah Al-Othman, an IT project management specialist, said that he also needed public speaking to use whenever he was asked by his superior to give briefs or presentations.
