JEDDAH: Saudis have made it clear that they have not forgotten the bloody events and violations of human rights being experienced by Jerusalemites at the hands of the Israeli occupation of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

At 9 p.m. on Monday, Saudis launched the global hashtag "#For_Aqsa" as an expression of solidarity with the people of Jerusalem and in recognition of the threat that is being posed to the mosque.

Approximately 60,000 tweets were posted by Saudis to show empathy with Jerusalemites and to raise awareness about the Israeli violations against Al-Aqsa, and the plans being drawn up for the temporal and spatial division of the mosque between Jerusalemites and Jewish settlers.

The defenders of the mosque on social media chose twitter as the social networking platform on which to launch the initiative, due to the findings of a previous study that was conducted by "Business Insider", which stated that Saudis are the highest users of Twitter, with more than 4 million people across the Kingdom using it daily.

Ali Omar Badahdah, an Islamic studies professor at King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah, expressed support for the campaign considering to be a reflection of the stance of the government of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and its firm position toward the Palestinian cause in general, and Al-Aqsa Mosque in particular.

The organizers of the campaign used various means to show their support to the suffering Jerusalemites by diversifying their presence on social media; organisers used Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram in addition to Twitter to influence the public and attract more supporters to the cause.

Campaign participants include all segments and age groups of the Saudi society, which gave the campaign a vast and influential appeal. The campaign aims to target the whole Gulf area, the Middle East and North Africa to build a wall of Arab and Islamic media defense.
