The Shoura Council is currently discussing a proposal to introduce voluntary military service for eligible young Saudis.

The discussion on Tuesday was based on a proposal from a member, Abdul Aziz Al-Ataishan, who said it would not be mandatory.

In contrast, Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh earlier this month proposed mandatory military conscription for Saudis to help bolster the country’s armed forces.

Al-Ataishan said Saudis should serve for one to two years and trained to use modern military equipment.

This would help the armed forces meet its need for recruits, and create a backup force in times of war, he was quoted as saying in a local publication on Wednesday.

Al-Ataishan said there was need for quality training. He was not concerned about citizens not volunteering. “I’m sure if we want a million Saudis to join the army, they will come.”

He said the Ministry of Defense must prioritize the recruitment of those with university degrees. Those recruited with secondary school certificates can be assisted to get higher education qualifications once they complete their service.

Those who are not given jobs in the military after completing their voluntary service should be provided with 10-day refresher courses each year and given free medical treatment and discounted air tickets. They would become reservists that the country can call up at any time, he said.
