ABHA: In a case of corporal punishment, a grade 6 student of a primary school in the Al-Ariyan neighborhood of Abha has suffered an eye injury after his teacher allegedly threw a pen at him.

The father of the child, Ali Ahmad Al-Mihjani, who is a Saudi national, reported the matter to the police and also lodged a complaint with the Asir Educational Directorate, local media reported on Thursday.

“When I went to school to pick my son, Ryaan, up last Thursday, I found the counsellor treating him for an injury in the right eye, which was swollen up,” Al-Mihjani was quoted as saying.

“When I asked what had happened, the counsellor said the class teacher was chasing the boy in the corridor and threw a pen that hit his eye and caught him and beat him up. When I complained to the headmaster, he apologized and promised to investigate the matter,” Al-Mihjani said.

The father then went to the East Abha Police and took Ryaan to hospital to get a medical report before going to the Asir Educational Directorate.

Mohammad Al-Fifi, the spokesman of the directorate, reportedly confirmed receipt of the report from Al-Mihjani and added that the matter was being followed up.
