JEDDAH: The United States Consulate held a State Fair to celebrate the country’s its 240th Independence Day on Monday.

Hosted by Ambassador Joseph W. Westphal and Consul General Todd C. Holmstrom, the event was attended by over 500 guests, including Mohammad bin Ahmad Tayeb, director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Makkah.

Various booths highlighted typical activities and food found at America’s state fairs.

“Tonight we present to you a slice of Americana — the state fair. It represents the diversity and heritage of our country,” said Westphal.

There were many sponsors this year, representing the full spectrum of American companies and their Saudi partners in the western regions of Saudi Arabia. The event also included art exhibitions, and live entertainment featuring the Chicago-based bluegrass band The Henhouse Prowlers.

A press release from the consulate stated that Independence Day is celebrated in US each July 4 to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on that date in 1776.

“Americans celebrate the holiday by gathering with friends and family. Whole communities enjoy fireworks displays at night. In Saudi Arabia, we are celebrating in February to take advantage of the pleasant weather,” the statement said.

“This year’s National Day in Jeddah also takes place on our President’s Day, celebrated on the third Monday of February to honor all of the presidents who have served the United States.”

“Additionally, we are marking the 71st anniversary of the historic meeting between President Franklin Roosevelt and King Abdulaziz Al-Saud, at which the deep friendship between our two countries was founded.

That meeting took place Feb. 14, 1945 on the heavy cruiser USS Quincy. The ambassador’s residence in Riyadh, Quincy House, takes its name from that meeting,” the release stated.

The release stated that the theme of the celebration was to allow people an opportunity to experience US culture, commerce and cuisine.

“State Fairs are held annually throughout the United States, highlighting unique aspects of each state, hosting friendly competitions, and offering a variety of entertainment,” it said.
