RIYADH: The capital will soon witness the launch of the first project of its kind to manage traffic movement and address road conditions by monitoring up to 2,000 intersections.

The Transsuite US System for Traffic Management, being implemented by the Higher Commission to Develop the City of Riyadh and the Riyadh Traffic Department, entails the installation of 350 devices to control major intersections and uses 1,400 digital cameras for counting vehicle numbers, in addition to 175 cameras to read number plates, and a range of technical equipment managed by a specialized work team.

The system connects various control devices in traffic lights to achieve the smooth flow of traffic.

Following a range of studies conducted in the Kingdom, the authorities decided to implement the Transsuite system due to its modern format, as well as the fact that it has obtained multiple global awards in the field of traffic management. When the system was launched, many cities including Montreal and New York opted for it.

Among other functions, the system monitors speeding vehicles and those that run red lights, while also alerting authorities of other abnormalities such as fires or accidents.

The system conforms to the global standards for smart transport telecommunication by connecting and talking with other control devices in traffic lights.
