MADINAH: The police here have launched an investigation into claims that a senior officer defrauded a woman.

Brig. Gen. Fahad Al-Ghannam, spokesman of the city’s police, confirmed that a lieutenant is being probed, a local publication reported recently.

The woman said she had borrowed money from the policeman, her husband’s friend, in 2011 to rent some stores. She said she started paying the money back, although he allegedly did not provide her receipts.

When Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman announced that all debts of Saudi citizens up to SR500,000 would be paid, she told the police officer about this and wanted proof of her payments.

She claimed that the officer made her then sign a court document showing she owed him SR900,000, which was much more than she owed.

She went to court to file a complaint against the policeman, but was later arrested and jailed. She said the policeman then forced her to sign a document saying she owed that amount, with a time period to pay off the debt.

She has since hired a lawyer because she is afraid of being arrested and asked for the authorities to intervene in the matter.
