JEDDAH: Ed Cordova and Jess Lopez were the pair left standing out of the 13 that started to become the champion in the Overseas Filipino Bowlwers Club (OFBC) Kalayaan Cup “Magkasangga” (Partners) bowling tournament at Iceland Bowling Center here.
Cordova and Lopez had been seeded second after the four games with handicap qualifying round, and needed to beat the No. 1 qualifier twice for the title.
They did just that, beating the top seed tandem of Rico Bulalayao and Carmen Duma and earning bragging rights in the event held to celebrate the 119th Philippine Independence Day.
The pairs to play with each other were determined through drawing of lots.
The top four that advanced to the stepladder and championship rounds were the following: 1. Bulalayao-Duma 2. Cordova-Lopez 3. Benj Espinosa-Delia Javing 4. Rudy Jamon-Hercie Bosito.
Bulalayao and Duma ran away from the qualifying pack on 1,504 pinfalls. Cordova and Lopez were a distant second on 1,449, followed by Espinosa-Javing on 1,395 and Jamon-Bosito on 1,379.
The first match of the stepladder sent Espinosa and Javing against Jamon-Bosito with the third seed winning 320 to 316. Against Cordova and Lopez, however, Espinosa and Javing ended up at the short end of a 359-312 verdict.
The second match victory allowed Cordova-Lopez a shot at the championship against the top-seeded Bulalayao and Duma.
In both games of the championship Class B Cordova and Class C Lopez complemented each other beautifully.
Cordova shot 206 and Lopez 166 when the pair had half the job done in a 372-364 victory over Bulalayao (217) and Duma (147).
In the do-or-die game, it was Lopez that rose to the occasion, hitting 199 with Cordova on 158 to beat Bulalayao-Duma 357-345.
The champion team received cash prize plus trophy.
Bulalayao and Duma, who are both Class C bowlers, settled at first runner-up while the teams of Espinosa-Javing and Jamon-Bosito wound up second runner-up and third runner-up respectively.
