JEDDAH: The Overseas Filipino Bowlers Club (OFBC) Bowler of the Month series has reached the halfway mark, and only two thus far were repeat champions.
Friday, newcomer Johara Palot and Jess David were the champions for June in the latest installment in the monthly tournament leading up to the Bowler of the Year finals in December.
Palot and David both won in lopsided fashion.
Palot, a Class C bowler, was never threatened from the get-go to shoot the winning score of 992 in the men’s division on scratch games of 168, 178, 205, 192 and 158.
Taking advantage of her huge handicap, Palot likewise spreadeagled the field in the ladies division and returned 986 in the five-game series with handicap sudden death format competition.
Palot shot lines of 159, 148, 121, 142 and 166.
Class D Dan Mojares was the men’s division first runner-up on 922 (168, 222, 150, 118 and 144). Toto Lim took the second runner-up after totalling 897 (167, 151, 175, 156 and 158) while Edwin Agustin carded 134, 169, 176, 117 and 173 for 889 total that gave him a third runner-up finish in the division.
Shiela Monserate, looking to cash in as a beginner like Palot, could only settle for first runner-up on 893 on lines of 124, 123, 155, 128 and 113.
The next two lady bowlers to secure places on the podium, Carmen Duma and Malou Nidoy, were the ones to win at least twice in the series.
Duma, back-to-back champion for March and April, emerged second runner-up on Friday after compiling 873 on games of 128, 144, 133, 140 and 158.
Nidoy, the ladies division champion in January and May, tallied 858 in third runner-up position on games of 128, 132, 163, 171 and 144.
The winners received cash prizes during the awards ceremony in the OFBC’s sixth monthly event.
Under the tournament format, bowlers play five-game series with handicap sudden death with the top four in each division to receive cash prizes. In case of ties, the high and low rule will be applied to break the deadlock.
The Bowler of the Year finals in December have been expanded to include not only the monthly winners but those from the wildcard phase and the seeded qualifiers as well.
