JEDDAH: Toshi did justice to its No. 1 ranking by winning the championship crown in the OFBC Friday Afternoon League Season 6 at the Iceland Bowling Center here.
Flashing its top form to the very last session of the league’s 20-week run, Toshi never gave challenger Nilobabes a chance in their championship match and won by 679 to 647 pinfalls.
Fittingly, the championship featured the tournament’s two best teams. Toshi took over the lead from Nilobabes at the end of the 15th week and never looked back.
In the first match of the stepladder finals, Shadow Bowlers won a sudden death over two games with handicap against the two fellow survivors from the eliminations that completed the six-team stepladder cast.
No. 4 Shadow Bowlers returned 1,372 built around games of 372, 351, 329 and 320 from the quartet of Edwin Agustin, Rosalie Due Agustin, Hadi Pacheco and Hercie Bosito in that order.
The No. 6 team Youngsters tallied 1,321 while No. 5 Velocity Strikers compiled 1,292.
Shadow Bowlers then took down third-seed RTJ Baguio Transient House 724-683 in the second match to set up a crucial batte against the No. 2 Nilobabes for the right to challenge Toshi in the championship with a twice-to-beat format.
Nilobabes easily won by 688-655 thanks to strong games from Epoy Santos and Nap Patayan, who rolled 194 and 184 respectively, as well as 166 from skipper Babes Yushimine and 144 from Sharmaine Patayan.
While Nilobabes had it easy against Shadow Bowlers, this was not the case against the sharp Toshi, which delivered right off the bat and did not use up its twice-to-beat edge as the top-seeded team in the championship match.
Rico Bulalayao was the main man for Toshi with his effort of 196. Cesar Sacramed added 172 while Vivian Sacramed and skipper Ryan Liwagon had 161 and 150.
Nilobabes were looking to win to at least extend the match by another game. It was not to be, not even close, as their players simply collapsed under championship pressure. Santos’ score of 177 was the best Nilobabes could offer. The father-daughter team of Nap and Sharmaine contributed 165 and 151 while team Captain Babes Yushimine had 154.
Trophies and cash prizes were awarded to the winners during the prize distribution ceremony. Also, the Bowlers of the Week each received an incentive prize of 5kg of rice and the tournament record holders were awarded trophies.
Commissioner Joel Nidoy thanked the officers of the Overseas Filipino Bowlers Club, team managers, captains and players for their support of the tournament. Nidoy announced the league Season 7 will start on July 7.
