The winners of this year’s awards for the best new and established cartoonists will display their work on Tuesday at the Prince Faisal bin Fahad Fine Arts Institute in Riyadh.

The exhibition of cartoons focuses on corruption in society. The work will be on display for five days and then move to other parts of the country. Culture and Information Minister Abdul Aziz Khoja will open the event.

A panel of judges recently chose the winners based on technical, artistic and aesthetic standards. The artists were also judged on their style, ideas, execution and originality.

The exhibition aims to highlight the role cartoons have on art, culture and the media; and identify new talent in the Kingdom. Forty artists participated in the competition, originally submitting 240 cartoons. The judges shortlisted this to 225 pieces.

Abdullah Sayel, a cartoonist and president of the Saudi Society for Comics and Animation, thanked the participating artists and Khoja for supporting the event. He said the event has helped showcase the work of beginners and advanced practitioners.

He said the organization published a book on cartoons this year exploring corruption and its impact on society. Last year the organization released a book with the culture and information minister on the work of the late Ali Kharji and past winners.

The award winners in the professional and advanced category were Abdullah Jaber Al-Omari in first place, with Fahad Al-Ghanim Khamisi and Mahmoud Mahya Alhamzani in second and third places.

In the intermediate category, the winners were Majid Salem Al-Shammari, Mahmoud Ali Al-Essa and Subhi Abdullah Atwi.

Medals and certificates of appreciation went to Rashid Alsaleem, Hana Hajjar and Mohamed Al-Hazza.

Certificates of appreciation for excellent talent went to Saleh Salem Alshihri, Abdul Mohsen and Mohammed Alhuwaimel.
