A rare laryngectomy and lymph node removal surgery is claimed to have been successfully conducted at International Medical Center (IMC).
The 10-hour operation was conducted on a 60-year-old man who arrived in the hospital complaining from obvious voice hoarseness, Dr. Ameen Al-Herabi, head of a medical team, and chairman of ENT department and consultant of ENT and thyroid at IMC, stated.
After laboratory tests detected a tumor in the patient’s larynx, biopsy was taken in order to define the type of the tumor and all necessary examination was done to make sure that the body is free of tumors, Dr. Al-Herabi said.
He added that the operation was done in association with the oncology board. Every cancer patient has to go through the board’s weekly session. The board comprises all doctors involved in surgery, including consultants of head and neck surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, anesthesia and radiology. “At the board session, we came to a consolidated decision about the laryngectomy and lymph node removal.”
Dr. Ameen explained that the 10-hour surgery was successfully conducted without any complications. After two days in the intensive care unit, the patient was transferred to the inpatient room where he spent 10 days and then he continued the follow-up at oncology, and head, neck and thyroid surgery departments.
Dr. Ameen expressed gratitude to doctors and specialists whose combined efforts resulted in the patient’s rapid recovery. He particularly thanked Dr. Yasir Bahader, consultant radiotherapy, and Professor Ezzeldin Ibrahim and Dr. Ahmed Refae, both consultants chemotherapy.
Dr. Ameen added that the patient will be able to speak again despite the removal of his larynx. The surgery included an additional procedure of connecting the opening between the trachea and the esophagus, where a stoma button is installed. The patient can hold his finger on it and speak.
