Today, avant-garde fashion is gaining ground like never before thanks to several maverick designers. They are designing incredibly high-powered dresses that shed light on a whole new way to dress. Most importantly, these designers who think out of the box know that their eccentric creations must be wearable too.

It’s no surprise that the craze for it is skyrocketing because people love these bizarre outfits.

So bringing us closer to the grandeur of this extreme yet exciting fashion in luxury is a Hong Kong-born London-based designer Robert Wun. He is a master at incorporating extremes from two different spheres of life mainly nature and artificial world as they give an all-out feel to his work.

In an exclusive interview with Arab News, he shares with us his impassioned obsession with the so-called avant-garde side of fashion and much more.

In fact, the bug of this imaginary world caught him quite early on. He knew one thing for sure that his fantasies can be turned into reality. “I’ve always been fond of nature and art since I was 2. However, when I was 12-13, I met a friend of mine studying fashion. From there on, my interest grew toward the art of fashion,” he says.

This coincidental meeting proved to be an eye-opener for him. He realized that turning dreams into reality from 2-D to 3-D is possible based on the human body to form extraordinary art. “For me, it’s a perfect combination and balance of my interest in the organic nature and design aesthetic. Since then, I never looked back because I knew that’s the path I wanted to go to,” he says. “I feel it’s a perfect balance when it comes to putting together the idea of original art and the commercial values.”

To hone his skills, Robert joined London College of Fashion from where he learnt all the paraphernalia associated with the word ‘fashion’. “After graduating in 2012, I was technically geared and equipped with knowledge. After all, this is the key to building a profound foundation toward the road to real creativity,” he suggests.

His dazzling dresses are adored by celebrities and fashionistas alike because of two major factors that he considers quite vital to his creative process — the attitude and the brand’s artistic aesthetic. “It’s more than just a beautiful piece,” says Wun. “It should be aesthetically original from every single visual image to the real garment itself.”

So who is the celebrity that he dreams of seeing in his cool creations?

“Tilda Swinton is someone very special to me. She is the one I want to dress,” he says.

Women are very conscious about what they wear. They want something that makes them look hundred percent perfect. They just can’t compromise when it comes to this. As Wun tips off, “While women get satisfaction from what they wear on the appearance level, their ultimate goal is to find out a personality relevant identity. It depends from person to person but there is always something intriguingly deep that reflects on individuals’ apparel. This is what makes fashion interesting.”

As Robert Wun tends to move toward becoming a highly recognized luxury label, it wants to attend to a particular group of women who have their own beliefs. Such women, he says, are known to be romantically edgy and most importantly believe in the idea of celebrating independent elegance. “They are always looking into originality and quality not just in fashion, but also in art and lifestyle. They are confident and all set with a unique taste in fashion,” he says.

Like all people looking up to someone or something for some sort of inspirational vigor, Wun’s attention draws to a fine artist named Andy Goldsworthy (British sculptor and photographer) as his role model.

And his SS16 collection titled “Cloudscape” resonates much more with the concept of daring and eccentric phenomenon. He dug into uncovering the mystery of clouds that have always been part of his identity. Wun has diligently captured the essence of clouds as and when they form with his dresses.

When it comes to fabrics, there is nothing particular as such that he adheres to. “It all hinges on the concept of the collection I’m working on. But for color’s sake, I’m attached to using black in all the beautiful finishing and detailing underneath the garments as it gives a sense of idea about a poetic secret behind every creation,” says Wun.

While designing his collections, he follows certain guidelines. “The chaotic interplay between nature and artificial forms is the center of the brand ethos, combining the novelty of nature with the revolutionary forms of the artificial world. My label brings a new dimension to the luxury market by harmoniously uniting cutting-edge manufacturing with an uncompromising attention to traditional values,” he says.

For him, life is a long journey where there is nothing we can’t live without. Still fashion is his keenest passion in life. “This is where London has given me so much to be proud of i.e. Better be original and bold, then what; quick success will follow on its own,” he says.
