Mesotherapy is increasingly becoming popular among Saudi women as a safe method to obtain freshness and beauty. It does not require scalpel surgery. The injectable cosmetic treatment is considered safe because it does not incur any risk to the patients.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Gebran, dermatological surgery consultant at the armed forces hospital in the southern region, underlined that Saudi women prefer to use safe cosmetics such as whitening and beauty creams, simple and dermabrasion peeling agents, and mesotherapy or any other risk-free cosmetics.

“There is a big demand for mesotherapy, especially among women seeking freshness and beauty as well as for the treatment of hair loss. It gives positive and pleasant results, provided that clean and sterile instruments are used in the operation,” Al-Gebran said, stressing the importance of taking maximum precautions.

Meanwhile, ophthalmology and laser surgery consultant, Dr. Hassan Abu Hathra highlighted that mesotherapy is a safe means for women, adding that women need at least six sessions of this treatment to achieve the required results in terms of removal of pigmentation and damaged skin as well as for obesity treatment.

“This kind of cosmetic treatment is mainly demanded by women who are aged between 25 to 45 years. Nearly 70 percent of skin clinic patients opt to resort to this method and 40 percent would not hesitate to immediately use it,” he said, noting that ophthalmology comes as the patients’ third choice after cosmetics and laser treatment.

He underlined that mesotherapy is a minimal invasive procedure that is widely used worldwide to treat various injuries and medical conditions, adding that this medical specialty targets problem areas with microinjections of conventional or homeopathic medicines, vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

“Tiny 'medicinal bullets' are delivered directly into the mesoderm (middle layer of skin) that are highly specific to the condition being treated,” he said, adding that it is fairly expensive as it is costly to the service provider.

“The concept of this treatment is based on the theory that this combination of substances or drugs leads to melting the fat located under the skin causing fat cells to shrink,” he said.

“This method is 100 percent safe as it adopts natural materials such as vitamins, minerals, growth factors and proteins found in nature, but it is concentrated in a specified location, and it is already found in our bodies which makes it very safe,” he said.

Mervat Abdel Majid, a dermatologist at Downey Medical Center in Abha, said mesotherapy has increased in popularity in recent times and that it is based on the use of non-surgical injections containing some pharmaceuticals authorized by the World Health Organization (FDA), given to the patient through injections for the treatment of some skin and cosmetic problems such as cellulite, obesity, renewal of skin cells and hair loss, among others.

“Mesotherapy requires in-clinic sessions for a period ranging between 30-45 minutes where the patient can then resume her normal life immediately after the treatment session. It is also possible that more than one area can be injected in one session especially in the cases of treatment of hair loss and fat melting,” she said, adding that fat melting injections are given under the skin which will make fat cells shrink in size where the body would dispose of the fat through the lymphatic system.
