Last week, I was discussing the dangers of mercury used as a preservative in vaccines and other products. This was to create awareness in young parents who are not familiar with exposure to mercury or other heavy metals. Today, I will continue elaborating on the subject and also offer some recommendations to protect little children’s health, but before I do that, I would like to revisit the subject of arsenic, the toxic heavy metal that is added to chicken feed in commercial farms.
Two weeks ago in Part 5 of this very same series, I spoke about the shocking fact that the commercial chickens we eat are being given feed that contains the carcinogen, arsenic, in order to fatten the birds with minimum amount of food and to give their meat a pinkish healthy hue. Inorganic arsenic is the most toxic form to the liver in humans. Look how profitable this kind of feed is to the industry! It makes the birds grow fatter, while they are given lower amounts of feed. This was given to them with the knowledge of the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and even after detecting the toxin in the livers of such chickens, compared to other chickens, which are not treated with arsenic.
However, the smart American consumer turned to chicken raised in small farms, which do not use this toxic type of chicken feed. Fearing a backlash, mainstream chicken meat industry stopped the feed. Avoiding loss of sales too, the Pfizer subsidiary immediately withdrew arsenic from the chicken feed in the US, but kept the toxic feed for export!
Only a couple of months ago in response to consumer reaction, the FDA finally asked Pfizer to stop adding it to Roxarsone (the feed with arsenic). While the FDA claimed that arsenic in low levels is still safe, scientists at the University of Southern Carolina Department of Environmental Health and Sciences cautioned against arsenic and other heavy metals (mercury, lead…), as they leave detrimental neurological damage on developing fetuses and children, especially the 3-Nitro the type of arsenic that is added to chicken feed. This very kind is four folds more poisonous than mercury.
Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that those who ingested large amounts of arsenic-tainted rice had noticeable changes on the cellular level that are associated with developing cancer. Other report studies confirmed the development of a variety of cancers linked to the toxic metal.
I apologize for this interruption about arsenic. It was BREAKING NEWS for me! I hope the Saudi FDA will watch out for arsenic and other toxic chemicals (fluoride in water) accepted by its American counterpart. Now, I shall go back to the topic of mercury.
One of my recommendations is that you ask your doctor if the vaccines contain thimerosal, the mercury preservative. Another important factor, don’t rush to give your children the flu shot before investigating its safety. The Internet is so informative these days. When your child requires dental fillings, ask the treating dentist about alternatives to mercury, or amalgam fillings.
My advice to young mothers is to delay certain vaccines (MMR…) and space vaccines out (no need to do them all at one single appointment for convenience). Leave a gap between vaccinations to give the body a chance to detoxify and boost immunity. Skip some that are not necessary when your child is breastfed (rota virus…) and also when a baby is raised in a hygienic environment. Breast milk provides natural protection and boosts the infant’s immunity to fight viruses and infections.
Besides, mother’s milk is the ideal nourishing food for babies. Breastfed babies have stronger immune systems than formula fed infants, let alone, the bonding that is created between mother and child by the mere practice of breastfeeding. It is emotionally and physically healthy for both mother and baby. The growing infant needs it for mental, emotional, and physical development. Breast milk can counteract toxins as well and help the development of the detoxification and immune systems. Another bonus for breastfed babies is that they are found to have higher intelligence quotient (IQ) than their formula fed counterparts. Anyway, have you ever seen a cow or calf that is “intelligent”?
Formula milk does not fully supply the needs of infants’ growth, even if vitamins and minerals are added to it. It does not contain the important brain healthy essential fatty acids and antioxidants naturally found in mother’s milk, which supplies all the necessary nutrients for their bodies to grow and brains to develop adequately. Breast milk is still a mystery to be fathomed.
Not only do mothers-to-be harm their unborn babies by smoking and drinking alcohol and zero-calorie beverages, but also by using cosmetics (lipsticks, deodorants, lotions…) during pregnancies. Researchers and scientists found that women and breastfeeding mothers using commercial cosmetics containing toxic chemicals and heavy metals (mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium…) exposed their fetuses and babies to neurological and learning disorders.
The environmental organization, EcoWaste of Manila, found that most commercial cosmetic brands “contained traces of heavy metals,” with some exceeding the acceptable limits put by ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations). That is how fetuses and infants get exposed and poisoned by contaminated products. Aileen Lucero, Acting National Coordinator of the EcoWaste Coalition in Manila, the Philippines, said 300 contaminants are detected in umbilical cord blood of delivering mothers, who could pass the toxins to their foetuses, causing neurological and learning disorders.
Scientists at the Environment Working Group in the US advise people, mothers-to-be in particular, against such ingredients as: fragrance or dyes; DMDM hydantoin and imidazolinyl urea; methylchloroisothiaolinone; parabens; PEG; chemicals ending with -eth, sodium lauryl or laureth sulphate; triclosan or triclocarbon; and TEA as well as creams with lactic, glycol, AHA and BHA acids; hair dyes with ammonia, peroxide, p-phenylenediamine, diaminobenzene, and all dark and permanent dyes; liquid soaps with triclosan; and nail polish and removers containing preservative formaldehyde, which is “concealed” in cosmetics.
Cosmetics should be included to the list of other harmful products like smoking, alcohol, heavy metals, chemical exposure, and medical and recreational drugs. Mothers-to-be and lactating mothers should avoid them during the conception period (the fathers as well) and during pregnancies.
Unfortunately, mercury is found everywhere and even in certain big fatty fish (tuna, shark, swordfish…). Investigate the fish you and your children eat. Some farmed fish live in filthy and contaminated environments and are fed antibiotics and “dubious” feed. Make sure your fish is also mercury-free and not contaminated. Better safe than sorry.
Through industrial waste, cleaning agents, personal care products and cosmetics, children can have mercury poisoning. Read my previous articles, Why Mercury is Dangerous, published in Arab News, Nov. 4, 2013. You will find more details and information about the heavy metal and its damaging effects on health and the environment.
Next week, I will write about a substance that is found in most processed foods, bakery goods, candies, chewing-gum, ice-creams, soda drinks and others that have become supposedly-nourishing foods given to children.
