“Foodies KSA” is a group of food lovers, mainly in Saudi Arabia as well as other countries which are united through social media. The group shares restaurant reviews, recipes, information on healthy eating — basically all things food. The group also publicizes important food events and expos taking place in Saudi Arabia, making it the go-to place for food reviews and news.
“Foodies KSA” founder Ahmed Darwish said it all started as a WhatsApp group back in 2012, when he returned from the UK where he learned professional cooking. He wanted to gather his friends who share the same passion for cooking, on one platform. Gradually, the numbers increased and in March 2016, the members decided to create accounts on various social networks such as Snapchat, followed by YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
“People liked what we, a group of young men and women in Jeddah, were doing. Our restaurant reviews always have a twist; we also have recipes and health tips. We make it fun and interesting,” Darwish said.
He said the group is not limited only to professional chefs. “We have only two professional chefs onboard; the others are people who love to cook or simply love food.”
“Foodies KSA” is a team of 12; its core team consists of seven people and once a week, a nutritionist and a fitness expert share knowledge on exercise and eating healthy.
The group has attracted a huge following from places such as Kuwait, Germany, and the US where there are many Saudis studying. “The sky is the limit! Our team is working on covering recipes and restaurants in places such as Dubai, Doha, Kuwait, Cairo, Beirut, Istanbul, London and Boston. We always have foodies from different countries on board and can become a worldwide food network,” he said.
On the group’s expansion plans, Darwish said: “We are planning on having a digital platform for food lovers; we also want to start a consultancy service that can provide help for restaurants and chefs, make marketing campaigns, do photo shoots and design restaurant menus.” He said the group does not favor one specific kind of food but covers everything from “cafeterias to five-star restaurants.”
Darwish said the group is self-funded. “We are a non-profit organization. We refuse money from small shops and home businesses because our aim is to promote local brands.” he said. “We try to post daily, but not all are restaurant reviews. We aim to cover 4-5 restaurants a week,” Darwish said.
