The Indian Cultural Society Jeddah (ICSJ) will distribute used textbooks on March 30 and 31 at Shadab restaurant from 8.30 p.m. to 11.30 p.m.
The ICSJ collected the books at the Indian International School Jeddah (IISJ) for free distribution among students who are financially constrained to pay for new textbooks.
“Distribution of the books will take place on a first-come-first-serve basis. Parents can come and take the books free of charge according to the need of their children,” said Arif Quraishi, president of the society.
ICSJ has been collecting used books from the IISJ for the past 20 years. Every year in March, at the end of the final exams, they start their campaign to gather books.
Last year the society collected almost 18,000 books, of which 4,000 were discarded as they were in a very bad condition. The remaining 14,000 books were distributed among needy students of the IISJ.
Parents and teachers of IISJ praised the efforts of the ICSJ for helping the poor children.
“This is a private project of the ICSJ as our social responsibility toward our community and people. We always ensure the anonymity of the parents who take the books to save their dignity and pride,” he said.
He further said new books are not affordable for everyone, especially the parents who have 4 to 5 children.
“We are very thankful to children and parents who donate their books every year and help us in helping the needy of the community,” he added.
